Our Story

Llechen Lân started out in 2016 as roofers to the Brondanw Estate (home to Clough Williams-Ellis the architect who founded Portmeirion).  Founders Ieuan Thomas Williamson and Bethan Gritten attended a primary school in the mountains built by slate quarrymen for their families.  Ieuan's great grandfather was a ferryman transporting slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog for world distribution by sail.

Our landscape has been shaped by this material and this heritage is very important to us.  Our work, therefore, aims to remind and inspire the viewer of what can be done with natural materials, from the simplest to the most ambitious projects.  This requires the retention and development of skills which are in danger of being lost as the trend to mass production gains momentum.

OUR TEAM

  • Ieuan Williamson

    Ieuan Williamson is the driving force behind Llechen Lân. He is passionate about craftsmanship, from design and sourcing sustainable materials to construction and skills-sharing. Ieuan has been roofing since the age of 21 and has an NVQ II in Roofing Occupations and a Level 3 Award in the Repair and Maintenance of Traditional Buildings. He has trained in Germany with world renowned decorative slaters and teaches advanced slating skills at the School for Master Roofers, as well as delivering training on-site.

  • Dwyryd Rogers

    Dwyryd Rogers is a strong apprentice roofer with a family background in stone work and agriculture. His skill base is quickly expanding and he will be attending an intensive timber framing course with Ieuan in 2024.

  • Gethin Jones

    Gethin has recently joined Llechen Lân and is already a highly valued member of the team. He has excellent transferable skills through experience of being a National Trust ranger and teacher.

  • Bethan Gritten

    Bethan Gritten (BA Hons) provides financial and strategic services to Llechen Lân. She has a PGCert in Local Government Management and a Professional Certificate in Management from the Association of Project Management and can sometimes be found on site.

Primary subcontractors

Jared Williamson has five years’ experience with Llechen Lân as well as being lead painter and decorator for the Brondanw Estate.

Daniel Quirsfeld is a general builder with a diverse skill-base and runs DQ Construction

Llechan Lan have carried out roofing work for my clients for a number of years. They specialise in traditional welsh slate roofing and have done a fantastic job completing complicated slate valleys, slate cladding for walls and chimneys and random slate re-roofs. They have stopped water ingress in places where others have failed.
