Heritage

A building is nothing without a reliable roof, but heritage slating is the feature which makes a dwelling stand out as traditional, bedding it into the landscape as if it has always been there.

Our heritage work includes random diminish roofs, a range of slate valleys, hanging slates on oak lathe instead of battens with oak pegs instead of nails and lime torching (traditional plaster between slates).  Combined with metal skylights and rainwater goods and breathable paintwork these roofs are beautiful to the eye as well as being highly effective and long-lasting.

The breathability of these roofs gives excellent indoor air quality and reduced condensation.  With strategic venting this can be retained even when combining with high-performance modern insulation.  Alternatively our friends at Hempcrete Cymru can lay all-natural, carbon negative hempcrete between rafters for a totally sustainable roof.

The aesthetic, air quality and extraordinary life-span of heritage roofs are some of the factors leading to their growing popularity, both on renovations and new buildings - but what is also important is the retention and development of traditional skills for future generations.  This is vital when it comes to meeting the requirements of listings, as many building companies are now unable to successfully reproduce heritage features.
